The seamless steel pipe is usually made by using steel ingot or steel slab as the raw material. After pierced by piercing machine, the raw material is made into semi-finished seamless steel tubes which is also called hollow billet. Then, after processes like hot rolling, cold drawn or cold rolling, seamless steel pipes is finally produced. According to the production process, the seamless pipe can be classified into cold drawn pipe, and hot rolled pipe, etc.

Both cold drawn seamless pipe and hot rolled seamless steel tube come in common-use steel tube, boiler seamless pipe, alloy and stainless steel pipe, and so on. In addition, cold drawn seamless steel pipes can also be divided into carbon steel, alloy and stainless steel thin wall tubes, etc., according to the materials.
The outer diameter of hot rolling seamless pipe is usually larger than 32mm, and the pipe wall thickness ranges from 2.5mm to 75mm. The outer diameter of cold rolled seamless steel pipe is usually 6mm, and the pipe wall thickness can be 0.25mm. Thin wall tubes can be manufactured with an outer diameter of 5mm and its wall thickness can be smaller than 0.25mm.
As compared with hot rolled seamless steel pipes, the cold rolled pipe has higher dimensional precision.

Mostly, seamless tube are made from No. 10, 20, 30, 35, and 45 carbon structure steel, or alloy constructional steel like 16Mn and 5MnV, or materials like 40Cr, 30CrMnSi, 45Mn2, and 40MnB, etc. Seamless steel pipes made from No. 10 and 20 mild steel are mainly used for fluid transferring, and seamless pipes made using No. 45 and 40Cr are primarily used for producing mechanical components and parts. In order to ensure strength and durability, all pipe manufacturers impose strength test and flattening test on the seamless tube.
